Samuel Shacklett (1804-1886)

Samuel Shacklett was born in Fauquier County, Virginia, May 31, 1804, a son of Edward and Elizabeth Rector Shacklett. Husband of 1) Maria Graham Henry Shacklett (1811-1870), and 2) Sallie Long Shacklett (1825-1893). Relocated to Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1828; successful merchant (store was on the northeast corner of Court Square and North Main Street); active in town affairs, having been among elected trustees of the town for 1838; served as an appointee on the Harrisonburg subscription committee for the Harrisonburg and Staunton Turnpike Company. Father of five children. Business partner with Simeon B. Gibbons. Donated an acre of land, within Woodbine Cemetery, to be used as a “Soldiers’ Cemetery“. Died June 30, 1886. His grave is in Woodbine Cemetery, Harrisonburg, Virginia.
