Though I’m still gathering data, I figured I would go ahead and give something to consider, at least up to a point. As readers may recall, I presented some raw numbers on life members (as of 1847), and the places that these people represented doesn’t even begin to show how many places had active auxiliaries.
Annual reports of the ACS began enumerating auxiliaries in its Sixth Annual Report (1823). What follows below is the count up through the Eleventh Annual Report (1828). Before that list, however, I thought I’d share a few details.
As of 1823: there were forty (40) auxiliaries.
1824: no change.
1825: Thirty-eight (38). Loss of one each in Georgia and one in Connecticut.
1826: Fifty-seven (57) auxiliaries. Gains being as follows: Virginia – 13; Georgia – 1; Maine – 1; New Hampshire – 1; North Carolina – 3.
1827: Seventy-nine (79) auxiliaries. Gains being as follows: Ohio – 7; Pennsylvania – 7; Virginia – 4; One each for District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey. Loss of one (1) – Georgia.
1828: Ninety-nine (99) auxiliaries. Gains being as follows: Ohio – 8; Virginia – 4; North Carolina – 3; One each for Connecticut, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania.
