Not sure you can read the headstone, but both died on December 9, 1858. They were nearly 16 months old.

Lots of ways to die in those days before antibiotics.

I’m guessing it was death as a result of one of the winter problems for children. Maybe whooping cough, or some respiratory infection. Then again, typhoid is possible, as are any number of ailments considering the parents’ regular exposure to the canal folks passing through.

The Markers have held up really well. I can read most of the info on them in your pictures.
God Bless You for remembering your kin.

Do you know the site where the Clear Spring Hotel existed during the CW ? I have a descriptive letter that mentions this place, also Indian Spring Hotel and the Fair View Hotel, which was on the summit of a bald mountain en route to Hancock. The Fair View Hotel offered a magnificent view of the Potomac and the mountains surrounding.

Let me look into that, Brad. I have a few resources handy, but not sure if one would help with that. Also, there is a Clear Spring Historical Society, right there in town, but I never can seem to catch the place open.

I forgot about Indian Spring and Fair View… don’t know about those two. Generally, my run is from Clear Spring to Big Spring, and into Four Locks.
