Census Data: 1850: House #764; 1860: Valleysburg Dist. 3; 1870: Luray Dist. – Shoemaker. OBITUARY: born 06 Oct 1840, died after one week’s sickness 25 Jun 1907 aged 66 yrs. 7 mos. 19 das. Married 18 Apr 1867 Miss Delila N. Sours. This union was blessed with 10 children of whom the following survive:, John D., E. K. & Charles Miller & Mrs. D. A. Griffith of Culpeper Co. & Luther Miller, Mrs. I. E. Hoak, Mrs. James Hoak, Mrs. J. E. Bradley & Mrs. C. F. Judd of Page Co. His wife & one child preceded him to the spirit world. The deceased was one of the first to shed his blood in the cause of the Confederacy losing leg early in the morning at First Manassas before his command, Company H, 33d Va. Infantry had been ordered into battle. For many years after the war he served efficiently & acceptably as a justice of the peace. Burial in the Morning Star Lutheran Church Cemetery. In the death of Comrade Miller which occurred at his home near Printz Mill in this county, we are reminded that the remnant of ‘the thin gray line’ is being rapidly decimated. In 1861, when the call to arms was sounded he enlisted in a company formed in this county which afterwards became Co. H. 33rd Regiment, Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade. Early in the day of July 21st, 1861 on the bloody plains of Manassas he lost a leg & while this county suffered heavily in killed & wounded on that day, he was the 1st soldier from the county who lost a limb, so far as I know. His wound of course, retired him from active service in the field, but he was always true to his convictions & while accepting the situation as determined at Appomattox, he had no apologies to offer for having done his duty as he saw it. He was a member of Rosser-Gibbons Camp U. C. V., at the time of his death & always had a warm heart & a true hand clasp for his old comrades.

Notes on Irenus and Isabius and John David Printz, brothers of Page County, Virginia:

Irenus died of his wounds on or about September 6th 1862 and is buried near his parents in the family plot at the Isaiah Printz farm near Stoney Man.
Isabius joined John Mosby in Loundon County and fought until he was captured in 1864 and taken to Old Capitol Prison The National Archives lists his death at the Kalorama Fever Hospital in Washington D. C. and burial in a mass grave.
Following the capture of his brother, Isabius, John David joined Mosby and fought until nearly the end of the war when his horse was shot in battle and John David’s leg was broken. John David owed a significant amount of land, and inherited the farm of our ancestor, Capt. George Printz (Rev. War) If he was ever listed as a laborer it was while living on his father’s farm. The youngest brother of these men was Isaiah Printz (b. oct, 1849) who was too young to fight in the war and who became my great grandfather. He is buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Luray, Virginia.

All of the other Printz men listed on this roster are their cousins as are the Somers men

Robert, I found this page on your blog while doing genealogy research (again!). Your blogs have taught me so much about my Page Co. ancestors. I have background info on some family members who served in the Civil War but it’s difficult for me to get the big picture sometimes and see how everyone’s related. Here you bring the data to life in a concise, well-written manner. Kudos!!

I finally joined the 21st century and joined ancestry.com so I have a family tree online. I’d like to exchange info if you’re of the same mind. Both Paul Offenbacker and Thomas Purdham are my gg-grandfathers.

    • Dianne,

So glad that you found what I’ve placed online of value. I think we last left off questioning how Paul Offenbacker fit into the overall Offenbacker line, and need to touch base on that. Anything new with the research on the Purdham line?

Can you please provide the post war reference regarding the soldier pasted below named F.P. Price? Especially the reference to 1902? From my records the information regarding his birth and marriage is actually for Gabriel Price who is listed next in the roster. Also, he is noted to be the son of Gabriel but Gabriel Price had no son or daughter with the initials FP or any of age to participate in the war?

Interesting side note regarding Gabriel Price. He went home with the mumps and didn’t return. He was subsequently court martialed for desertion and sentenced to die but never executed. For your records his wife Sarah’s maiden name was Breeden. They were married May 10, 1849.

Thanks for all your information regarding the Page Grays. It has been a great help.

Hi Robert, I am just now getting back into my Page Co. family lines after a cousin has prompted me to do so. Probably half of the men on this roster are related to me in one way or another! I do have a couple of nagging Page Co. questions for you but wondered if this is the forum you would like for me to use? Really enjoy your blogs. Keep them coming!

Hi Robert – great! Question one – my Revolutionary ancestor, Frederick Sowers/Sauers/Sours, was from Page Co. My great aunt wrote a quick note that he was buried in the Peter Lionberger cemetery. When I asked her about this she stated that was what she had always been told. Do you know if this is so? Question two – I have an ancestor, Emanuel Smith, with his parents as Joseph Smith (Johannes Schmidt) and Frances Campbell. I’m trying to pin down Frances’ father – possibly Robert Campbell. Also, Robert’s father as Frances Campbell in Pennsylvania. Do you know anything about this family?

        • Hi Nonna… oops, you had me in a Civil War ancestors mind-set… I’m afraid I don’t know for certain about Frederick. Have you checked Find-a-Grave to see if anyone has posted him in that cemetery? As for Emanuel Smith… is he the same one buried in Green Hill? I’m afraid I don’t know anything about that line as well.

Hi Robert, Sorry! There is no listing for the Lionberger cemetery on Find A Grave. Emanuel Smith is buried in the Sours (Mill Creek) Cemetery.
