My personal favorite of the Southern Claims Commission records is for James Bennett of Orange County, NC – he filed a claim for a table (with cover) which was removed from his house by a Union officer in April 1965. The claim was denied; the table was the one on which Johnston surrendered to Sherman. (Apparently souvenirs didn’t have to be paid for.)
