… that in 1860, the election results map was much more colorful than the election results maps of today!

In all seriousness, it is interesting to see how the upper South was not in agreement with the lower South as to the best presidential candidate for 1860. It looks like all those warnings we saw about a secession-leaning Breckinridge didn’t reach the lower South!

Otherwise, just a small reminder that popular memory of a “solid South” in the time leading up to the war isn’t exactly in-tune with the facts. Yet, what might this mean for the secession referendum vote in, for example, Virginia? What role might this play in Virginia when it came to those who were reluctant to enlist in the first call for troops for the Confederacy?
